Reflective and creative explorations of ethnographic collections

Designed as a workshop, this seminar proposed by Bernard Müller will allow to explore an issue related to current ethnographic museums, particularly with regard to the history of the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum collections in Cologne (where the workshop is being held). On the basis of a theoretical approach, participants are invited to create their own “museographic performance”, a light form that answers the question asked. This semester, the preferred form is the performance, whether it is a museum visit or an intervention in the public space.

Access: The course is intended for BA and MA students in ethnology, drama, visual arts, graphic arts and media arts and any other field of study. Students are invited to participate in a creative and free approach.

Assessment: Design and Implementation of a project echoing a problem of the ethnographic museum (installation, performance or free intervention) in the permanent exhibition of the Grassi museum, alone or in a small group and documented by “making of” / written report.
