Reflexive and creative explorations in the ethnographic collections
This seminar-workshop aims to analyse the malaise that are facing most of the European ethnographic museums today. Just the once, this crisis will not be addressed only theoretically but also by proposing practical solutions. In an experimental approach and on a small scale level, the participants / students will elaborate during the semester their own museum-related propositions, envisaged as a curatorial answer to a theoretical problem.
In order to try to understand the stakes of the current crisis, having identified the symptoms of the malaise, we will retrace the history of the ethnographic museum as an institution but also as a scenographic and performative practice, echoing the current global situation, in a critical and postcolonial state of mind. Considering the form of the ethnographic exhibition as a theatre of objects (the latter not necessarily being material, as in « intangible culture » or « oral history »), we propose to approach the biography of the object by the multiplicity of appropriations and variety of uses/usages to which it is subject/object, as expression of the variety of temporalities it relates to.
Resting preferably upon objects of Ethnographic Collections of Saxony (SES), on related past projects or connected topics, the participants of the seminar-workshops will implement genuine museum projects (ethnographic propositions, artistic installations, performances, small exhibitions, multimedia devices, and outside the wall actions, such as guided tours in town, for instance ) that will be presented to the public in the permanent exhibition of the Grassi Museum in the last week of June 2016 (see Student Works WS 2015-2016).
In order to move away from disciplinary compartmentalisation, this workspace is envisioned as a collaborative platform, a place that aims to gather ethnologists, artists, philosophers, art historians, curators, mediators, designers / architects and various professions (and not only ethnologists), in collaboration with several departments.
Organised jointly with the Institute of Anthropology at the University of Leipzig, the Staatliche Ethnographische Sammlungen Sachsen, and at first for this semester with the HGB- Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, this and the following seminar-workshops are open to all.

Reflexive und kreative Erkundungen in den ethnographischen Sammlungen (des Grassi-museums für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig)
Dieser Seminar-Workshop beabsichtigt das Unbehagen, dem die meisten europäischen ethnographischen Museen heute gegenüberstehen, zu analysieren.
Die Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Krise erfolgt hier nicht nur theoretisch, sondern auch durch praktische Lösungsvorschläge. Mittels experimenteller Annäherung auf kleiner Ebene werden die TeilnehmerInnen während des Semesters ihre eigenen museumsbezogenen Vorschläge entwickeln, welche als eine kuratorische Antwort auf ein theoretisches Problem zu betrachten sind.
Um die Säulen der gegenwärtigen Krise zu verstehen, werden die Symptome dieses Unwohlseins identifiziert, indem wir die Geschichte des ethnographischen Museums als Institution und als szenographische und performative Praxis zurückverfolgen. Gleichzeitig wird mittels einer kritischen und postkolonialen Betrachtungsweise Bezug auf die gegenwärtige globale Situation genommen.
Die Form ethnographischer Ausstellungen als ein Objekt-Theater betrachtend (wobei Letzteres nicht unbedingt materieller Natur sein muss, sondern auch Bestandteil der immateriellen Kultur oder oralen Geschichte sein kann), schlagen wir vor, uns der Biographie von Objekten zu nähern, insbesondere deren verschiedene Aneignungsweisen und Varianten des Gebrauchs betrachtend, für welche diese Subjekt/ Objekt sind und welche Ausdruck unterschiedlicher Temporalitäten sind.
Ziel des Seminar-Workshops ist es, auf der Basis von Objekten der Ethnographischen Sammlungen Sachsens (SES) sowie diesbezüglichen vergangenen Projekten und Themen genuine Museumsprojekte zu entwickeln und zu realisieren, wie z.B. ethnographische Ansätze oder Vorschläge, künstlerische Installationen, Performances, kleine Ausstellungen, Multimedia-Vorrichtungen oder externe Aktionen wie z.B. geführte Stadt-Touren. Präsentiert werden die Ergebnisse dem Publikum in der Dauerausstellung des Grassi Museums für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig Ende Juni 2016 (siehe studentische Arbeiten WS 2015-2016).
Um uns von disziplinärer Abschottung fernzuhalten, betrachten wir den Seminar-Workshop als eine kollaborative Plattform, d.h. als einen Ort der Zusammenarbeit von Ethnographen, Künstlern, Philosophen, Kunsthistorikern, Kuratoren, Mediatoren, Designern, Architekten und anderen Fächern und Ausrichtungen.
Das Seminar wird gemeinschaftlich organisiert zwischen dem Institut für Ethnologie der Universität Leipzig, den Staatlichen Ethnographischen Sammlungen Sachsens und zum ersten Mal in diesem Semester mit der HGB – Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst. Sowohl dieses als auch alle folgenden Seminar-Workshops sind offen für alle.
Die Sitzungen finden jeden zweiten Freitag von 11-15 Uhr statt.
Die erste Sitzung ist am Freitag den 15. April 2016.
Neben dem regulären Programm findet noch ein weiteres Treffen statt, welches dem Aufbau der geplanten studentischen Vorschläge/ Arbeiten in der Dauerausstellung vorbehalten ist.

“The museum on the couch”
Explorations réflexives et créatives des collections ethnographiques
“The museum on the couch” ouvre un espace expérimental inédit au cœur du musée ethnographique, un lieu interactif où sont posés les problèmes que rencontre actuellement cette institution et où sont proposés des solutions pratiques, à l’épreuve du public du musée. Il s’agit d’un espace de confrontation constructive de la théorie et de la pratique, le principe étant celui d’une mise en espace d’un discours anthropologique. On s’attardera sur les difficultés rencontrés, en tentant de répondre de manière pratique à des questions théoriques (et inversement).
Mené en collaboration avec l’Institut für Ethnologie in Leipzig (http://ethno.gko.uni-leipzig.de) and the Staatliche Ethnographische Sammlungen Sachsen (http://www.ses-sachsen.de), ce séminaire-atelier disposera d’une salle de travail, d’un espace d’exposition situé dans l’exposition permanente et de moyens nécessaires à la mise en oeuvre des dispositifs proposés. Des interventions de personnalités invitées jalonneront le calendrier des activités.
Ce séminaire –atelier ouvert à tous s’adresse autant aux étudiants en ethnologie qu’en scénographie, beaux-arts, histoire de l’art ou muséographie, etc.
A partir d’objets des Collections Ethnographiques de Saxe (SES), de projets passés ou de thématiques connexes, les participants du séminaire-atelier mettront en oeuvre des projets muséographiques qui seront présentées dans un espace de l’exposition permanente. Dans un souci de décloisonnement, cet espace est envisagé comme un espace collaboratif, un lieu où se rencontrent autour d’une problématique commune des ethnologues, des philosophes, des historiens de l’art, des conservateurs, des médiateurs, des scénographes/architectes, des artistes et divers métiers liés de près ou de loin au musée : éclairagiste, ingénieur du son/image, graphiste, etc.
La notion de crise des institutions ethnographiques, et notamment celle qui affecte le musée ethnographique, sera au cœur de nos préoccupations. On tentera d’en mettre en lumière les symptômes scénographiques, dans ses dysfonctionnements, ses réussites autant que dans ses cafouillages créateurs, tels qu’ils se manifestent dans les musées ethnographiques aujourd’hui dans le monde en général, et au musée d’ethnographie de Leipzig en particulier.
En guise d’entrée en matière, considérant une exposition – qu’elle soit permanente ou temporaire -comme un théâtre d’objets (ces derniers n’étant pas forcément matériels, à l’exemple de la “culture immatérielle” ou des documents d’archives orales), on se propose d’aborder la biographie de l’objet par la multiplicité d’appropriations dont il témoigne et d’usages dont il est le sujet/objet, s’inscrivant ainsi dans une diversité de temporalités dont il convient de rendre compte.
Pour le cycle 2015-2016, quatre objets-thèmes qui donneront lieu à quatre installations spécifiques seront retenus. La première presentation publique aura lieu au printemps 2016.
