UE833 – Le terrain comme mise en scène : l’enquête en cinéma, théâtre et performance (arts plastiques)

Bon nombre de chercheur·e·s en sciences humaines, anthropologues, sociologues, géographes, archéologues ou mêmes psychologues, recourent à un dispositif singulier que l’on pourrait qualifier d’artistique pour poursuivre leur recherche : film, théâtre, opéra, concert, sonographie, performance, reconstitution, jeu de rôle, installation, partitions ou fictions littéraires, etc. Sans céder à la tentation artistique, ces démarches estiment ainsi atteindre une meilleure compréhension des faits sociaux, au plus près du réel. Dans une approche transversale aux sciences humaines et sociales, ce séminaire se propose de faire un état des lieux de ces propositions d’analyse du social, depuis leur apparition autour de 1980 dans les répliques de la « crise de la représentation ». Il parait essentiel de revenir, au cas par cas, sur les leviers épistémologiques qu’activent les diverses méthodes en recherches en sciences humaines et sociales par l’art, notamment sur les méthodes en anthropologie qui procèdent d’une forme de performance (au sens englobant que lui donnent les performance studies).
Par la suspicion qu’elle a jetée sur la possibilité d’une science humaine objective, la crise de l’anthropologie des années 1980 (Clifford et Marcus, 1986) a au moins eu l’avantage de déclencher une étonnante créativité méthodologique. Dans cette brèche s’engouffrent quantité de démarches dites hybrides entre art et SHS. Ces méthodes, qui se proposent d’intégrer l’enquête à la production d’une forme artistique. On se propose cette année d’établir une cartographie de ces diverses propositions d’analyse du social. Parmi cette diversité de méthodes se distinguent les recherches en SHS, notamment en anthropologie, qui procèdent d’une forme de performance : film, théâtre, performance-reenactment ou encore exposition-installation. Ces démarches relèvent d’une exigence méthodologique qui a pour but d’améliorer la compréhension de faits sociaux ; sans céder à la « tentation artistique », ni à dénier à l’anthropologie sa qualité scientifique. Bien au contraire, il s’agit de lui offrir la possibilité de renouveler ses propriétés heuristiques et critiques, en explicitant autant faire se peut les circonstances dans lesquelles son savoir est produit, en définissant sa nature, à l’intérieur précisément du cadre donné par le processus-laboratoire de l’enquête artistique. Les séances du séminaire seront rythmées par des intervenants invités à rendre compte des étapes de la construction de leur objet recherche, au plus près du réel : processus, tâtonnements ou doutes.

UE833 – Fieldwork as staging: anthropological investigation in film, theater and performance (visual arts)
Many researchers in the human sciences, whether anthropologists, sociologists, geographers, archaeologists or even psychologists, use a singular device that could be described as artistic to pursue their research: film, theater, opera, concert, sonography, performance, re-enactment, role-playing, installation, scores or fictions, and so on. Without yielding to artistic temptation, these approaches aim to achieve a better understanding of social facts, as close to reality as possible. Taking a cross-disciplinary approach to the humanities and social sciences, this seminar aims to take stock of these proposals for analyzing the social, since their appearance around 1980 in the wake of the « crisis of representation ». It seems essential to review, on a case-by-case basis, the epistemological levers activated by the various methods of research in the humanities and social sciences through art, particularly those methods in anthropology that proceed from a form of performance (in the all-encompassing sense given to it by performance studies).
The crisis of anthropology in the 1980s (Clifford and Marcus, 1986), which cast doubt on the possibility of an objective human science, at least had the advantage of triggering an astonishing methodological creativity. A number of so-called hybrid approaches between art and SHS have entered this breach. These methods aim to integrate inquiry with the production of an artistic form. This year, we propose to map these diverse proposals for analyzing the social. Among this diversity of methods are those in the social sciences and humanities, particularly in anthropology, which proceed from a form of performance: film, theater, performance-reenactment or exhibition-installation. These approaches are methodologically driven, with the aim of improving our understanding of social facts, without giving in to « artistic temptation » or denying anthropology its scientific quality. On the contrary, the aim is to give it the opportunity to renew its heuristic and critical properties, by clarifying as far as possible the circumstances in which its knowledge is produced, and by defining its nature, precisely within the framework provided by the laboratory-process of artistic inquiry. The seminar sessions will be punctuated by speakers invited to report on the stages in the construction of their research object, as close to reality as possible: process, trial and error, doubts.
